Top Ten Tips to Help You Achieve More

Article on Achieving More by Graham Ross of Lean Kaizen

I would like to share 10 top tips, to help you achieve more.

These tips could make a significant impact on your personal effectiveness,
if you think about them, on a daily basis.

It is all about personal Continuous Improvement.

Tip 1 from Graham RossDecide what you want out of life

Think about of all the things that you would like to achieve this year. Get a bit of paper and jot them down. Don't analyse them too much at this stage. Once you've got all your thoughts together apply the Pareto principle or the 80/20 rule
to your list.

Decide which few things on the list will have the biggest impact on your life.

These are the things you need to make happen.

Ignore the rest, until you've achieved these "vital few".

Tip 2 from Graham RossFormalise your goals for the year and write them down

Research shows that only 3% of the population have clear goals, written down.

Studies indicate that people who write down their goals achieve a far higher level of personal performance in their chosen area, than those who don't.

So, decide on your goals and write them down!

Put a planned completion date against each goal.

Display your goals so that you can easily see them.

By having them clearly visible, you will think about them, and take action towards them more often.

Make your display area look and feel professional.

These are your personal goals after all.

The things that you want to make happen in your life.

For instance, in my office I have displayed my vital few goals, individually written on coloured laminated cut outs of cars.

These are displayed on a timeline.

For me, the idea of a car being a way of getting from A to B works.

How you do it, is very much up to your personal preference.

The point is to just do it.

Tip 3 from Graham RossImagine already having achieved your goals.

Try visualising having already achieved a particular goal. Many of the top athletes do this. They imagine the experience of winning the race. They play it like a video in their head, over and over again. Imagination is very powerful.

The more you imagine achieving your goals the more your brain will work to make them become a reality.

Tip 4 from Graham RossPlan your day, every day

At the end of each day, take some time to plan the next day, and list all of the things that you need to achieve. As you sleep at night your right brain will be working on ideas for these activities for the upcoming day.

Tip 5 from Graham RossBreak each large goal down into a series of bite sized chunks

Goals that will have a major impact in your life are often difficult to achieve and complicated to make happen. If they weren't you'd probably have done them by now.

Break your goals down into a series of less daunting activities. By doing this the goal will feel more achievable. Devour the goal one bite at a time.

Tip 6 from Graham RossPrioritise your work with vigour

Prioritise your daily tasks as follows:-

Decide what is very important and what is less important.

A task is very important if it helps you move towards achieving one of your goals for the year.

These harder and more complicated tasks are ones that we tend to put off.

We procrastinate.

Don't!

Always start your day by working on a significant piece of work towards one of your goals. It will give you a sense of progress.
Don't stop until the task is completed.

Other tasks should only be done after progress is made on these important tasks.

Tip 7 from Graham RossGive yourself appointments

Schedule time with yourself to work on tasks towards your goals. There is never enough time to do everything. Make time in your diary to work on these vital few goals. Don't allow yourself to be interrupted. Focus on doing something significant with this time.

Tip 8 from Graham RossGet prepared

Prepare before doing each task. Clear you desk of all other distractions. Only have materials relevant to the task being performed. Once you've completed the task, clear your desk and prepare for the next one. Only touch each task once!

Tip 9 from Graham RossCreate a sense of urgency

Before you start working on a task towards your goals try and create a sense of urgency. Imagine that you are going on holiday tomorrow and that this task must be completed before you leave.

Tip 10 from Graham RossTip No 10. Reward yourself

When you have done something significant towards your goals, reward yourself. Buy yourself a coffee. Take your partner out for a meal.

Try some of these tips. They will work.

Hope this helps

Graham Ross
